in which I sketch (and label) my evening meal

Cereal Night is a time-honored tradition in our house. When you’re too tired or drunk (or both) to actually put together a meal, Cereal Night will always save your ass. I may not be good at math, but Chocolate Chex + Bowl + Milk = Happy Casey every time.

Running around Kips Bay looking for a place to Nosh before the DARK KNIGHT screening, we decided to go with the good old NYC stand-by — random pizza place. Sure the offerings at Random Pizza Place are covered in grease and only momentarily satisfying, but damn, those moments are good. I opted for my usual white pizza here, and it was a good call.

I eat entirely too many hotdogs. I never realized until I started drawing… but to be fair, these were amazingly delicious. I just couldn’t help myself. Salad tonight, for sure.

Back after a brief hiatus!
After a weekend of eating junk food in Philadelphia, I decided to go (somewhat) healthy, and make a homemade version of my favorite indian carry-out dish — Mattar Paneer. To the uninitiated - that’s peas ‘n’ cheese. A classic, and a delicious one at that.

Although I am normally a fastidiously healthy eater, I’ll admit it — I am a sucker for hot dogs. It is my kryptonite, my silver bullet, or my whatever-Batman’s-weakness-is. That said, I present to you the king of all hotdog meals - Papaya Dog’s $3.75 recession special. Delicious and apropos.

After a most heinous day at work, a one-martini dinner (yes, one, I’m a little lady and thusly don’t need much to become inebriated) was pretty much a necessity. Easy to make, but difficult to master, I recommend the Ketel One martini, straight up with olives. Lots of olives.

By sheer determination and will power I bypassed the impulse to order my dinner last night, and made myself orzo with spinach sauteed with garlic and olive oil, topped with fresh grated parmesan cheese. Simple, but tasty, complicated-sounding, but still easy enough to throw together before schelpping to the laundromat.

Sunday night usually demads my good old-fashioned fridge-dump cous cous, but this time, I think my odds and ends harmonized well enought to actually call it a ‘dish’. I made some roasted garlic and olive oil cous cous (from the box, before you get too impressed), and tossed in artichoke hearts, chick peas and some eggplant that I roasted for 10 minutes in the oven. I have the leftovers-of-the-leftovers today for lunch, and I’m definitely looking forward to it.

Saturday, we hit Tony’s for some family-style italian fare, and let me tell you - it was far from disappointing. We started with a really nice grilled veggie salad with asparagus, artichokes, tomatoes and provolone. But the real show stopper was the steak special - really tender beef with portabello mushrooms in a red wine reduction. Wow. I’m not a huge carnivore, but something inside of me went totally animal when I smelled this baby coming to the table.

Just your normal everyday turkey wrap from your normal everyday West Village diner. It tasted damn good though, as I was starving, and it provided some crucial pre-night of drinking energy. It was also nice to see that they added avocado to a turkey wrap without feeling obligated to add bacon. Conclusion: tasty, despite cliche.
